Industry Veterans Join Finisar for CATV Effort

Industry Veterans Join Finisar for CATV Effort SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 17, 1999--Finisar Corporation (Nasdaq:FNSR), today announced that two senior technologists, with a combined 58 years experience in the CATV industry, have joined the company to provide leadership for the new CATV digital return path program.

Wim Mostert, formerly Vice President of Technology at Augat/Thomas & Betts, and Bill Ellis, formerly Vice President of R&D at Augat/Thomas & Betts, are now key members of the Finisar CATV team. Mostert is serving as Director of Broadband Systems Engineering at Finisar while Ellis is now Finisar's Director of CATV Applications. These two experienced CATV technologists will help guide Finisar's CATV digital product development effort.

Wim Mostert spend the first 10 years of his career in the CATV industry in The Netherlands, followed by 12 years with Philips Broadband Networks as Manager of Engineering for RF and Fiber Optic systems for CATV. He joined Ellis at Augat in 1994 as VP of Technology in bringing new RF and Fiber Optic products to market. Mostert brings a vast experience with RF and Fiber Optic technology, products, systems and architectures for the worldwide CATV/MultiMedia market.

After 13 years of experience in system operations, Bill Ellis was promoted to VP Operations and ultimately to President of Broadband Engineering, Inc., a manufacturer of RF amplifiers and related equipment for CATV. After Augat bought Broadband, Ellis became VP of Research and Development for Augat Communications Products and was responsible for the development of Augat's RF distribution amplifiers and early optical transmission products. Ellis is a senior member and former Eastern VP of the SCTE. He holds 4 Cable TV related patents.

Bill Ellis has a BSEE degree from Purdue University and a Masters in engineering degree from George Washington University. Mostert has a MSEE degree from University of Technology in Delft, Netherlands, and is a member of the SCTE.

Both Mostert and Ellis bring their respective experience in the CATV industry to Finisar to apply Finisar's high-speed digital and optical expertise to develop and bring to market novel technical solutions for the Broadband and MultiMedia industry. The first example of this was the recently announced development of Finisar's Digital Return Technology, which provides a better way to transport two-way high-speed data, Internet and telephony signals over CATV systems.
