Finisar Is First to Deliver Small Form-Factor Pluggable Optical Transceiver SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 23, 2000--Finisar Corporation (Nasdaq:FNSR) announced today that it has delivered its first Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Optical Transceivers. The first of these new 1.25 Gb/s transceivers have been delivered to a leading provider of high-performance Gigabit Ethernet switches. This delivery coincides with the Company's demonstration of a 2.125 Gb/s version of the Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) optical transceiver to a second company, a market leader in Fibre Channel switches. These Gigabit-rate transceivers are fully compliant with all published portions of the Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP) Multisource Agreement (MSA), in which Finisar has been a very active participant. They are also fully compliant with both the Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel standards. Occupying less than half of the board space of their GBIC predecessors, these transceivers allow networking equipment manufacturers to cost-effectively double the port density in their data-communication systems while ensuring superior EMI performance.

Due to these higher board densities, electromagnetic interference will be an increasingly important design parameter in these new systems. Finisar's SFP transceiver modules are built with a fully metallic enclosure to ensure superior emission control and FCC test margins.

Additionally, each Finisar optical transceiver has built-in Serial ID capabilities, providing the user with information on the module's supported link length, standard interfaces, part number, manufacturer, and other parameters through a two-wire serial interface.

Optical transceivers are utilized by networking manufacturers in their switches, hubs and adapter cards for LAN, SAN and WAN applications to convert gigabit-rate electrical signals to optical signals and vice-versa for transmission over fiber optics.
